Welcome to the FLD TAB 2008!
Ill give you a brief introduction to those who didnt join in last year.

The Sportsbet

Each person starts off with $100 to bet with. Each week I will give the name of the two teams that will play in the Australian Rules Football League, or AFL. Just say the odds were $1.30 for Hawthorn and $1.50 for St.Kilda. If you bet $100 on Hawthorn, and they win, you get $30 (100 x 1.30 - 100). Not $130, because you dont get the money you bet back, you only get what you win. If they lose, you lose $100. Thats pretty much it.

Other Information:

  • The person that earns the highest amount of money from each week will get mentioned in the Hall of Fame.
  • You cant bet on both teams.
  • You cant bet after the match starts.
  • If you are on or go under $0, you can come back into the game if someone is kind enough to sponsor you with some of their own money.
  • Sponsoring isnt designed to give people a huge boost, its more just to help them out a bit if theyre running low.
  • You cant just sponsor someone a small amount of money to boost them up a place. (eg, i have $120 and Stipe has $130. Krusha sponsors me $10.01 so i move up a ranking)
  • The odds may be updated, so be sure to check back for any changes.
  • The odds are taken directly from the official AFL Sportsbet website.
  • You can start playing at any time!

Australian Rules Football: (Quoted from first edition)

There are 16 teams in the AFL. Each round has 8 1v1 matches. There are 22 rounds in a season. The top 8 teams after 22 rounds go into the finals. If two or more teams have the same amount of premiership points (Each win gives you 4 premiership points, 2 for a draw, 0 for a loss) the highest percentage team goes through. (% = Pts For / Pts Against * 100)
The rules for playing a match are like this: Each Match is divided into 4 quarters, each going for 20 minutes + stoppage time. 22 players from each team are on the field at one time. The sections of the ground are divided like this: Full Forward, Half Forward, Midfield, Half Back, Full Back and the Interchange. There are also Followers, who follow the ball wherever it goes, and Ruckman, who try to feed the ball to a Center/Follower player from a 'ball-up'. Its different to soccer, because instead of kicking it off the ground, you pick it up and kick it. If you kick it and it goes out without bouncing, it is a free kick to the other team.
At either side of the field, there are 4 tall posts. If you kick the ball through the middle of these posts, you get a goal, which is worth 6 points. If you miss to either side, it is 1 point, and is called a Behind. If you catch the ball after it has come off someones foot, you get a free kick. Also, you are not allowed to throw the ball, you must 'Handball' it.
You cant run more than 15 steps with the ball without bouncing the ball. Also, tackling is another way to earn free kicks. If a player has the ball, and you come up behind them and cause them to drop the ball without kicking or handball-ing it, it is a Free Kick to the tackler for his hard work. But, if you come on top of the player and push them over, it is called a 'Push in the Back', or if you hit them over the shoulder, it is called 'High' and both result in a Free Kick to the player that had the ball.
In the finals, if any of the top 4 teams lose, they get another chance to stay in the Finals. If one of the bottom 4 teams lose, they are automatically out of the finals. The 2 teams out of the Top 4 that win get a break and dont have to play the next round. When there is only 4 teams left, the semifinals begin. The 4 teams play in 2 matches and the 2 victorious teams go into the Grand Final.

(About the 'sponsors received - given' column - if youve received more sponsors than what youve given, the number will be positive (above $0). If youve given more than what youve received, the number will be negative. So its basically the amount youve received take away the amount youve given. That should clear up any confusion.)

(In Round 9, Match 1, several players hit $0. To keep the game alive, everyone in the SportsBet was given $100.)

---------------------

Ok everyone! Lets get on with this thing. The first round will be played by...

Essendon and the Western Bulldogs!

Odds

Essendon: $2.30
Bulldogs: $1.58

Home Team:

Both

Match Info

The Bulldogs have had a really impressive to start to the season with 3 wins and no losses. Theyre expected to do nothing short of impressing people again against Essendon.
Essendon, being the underdogs, will have a strong will do put up a good fight and possibly take out the victory. imo, theyre a really underrated team.

So, - go with the flow and tip the Bulldogs, or try your luck and tip Essendon. Your choice. ^_^

Ill put $30 on the Bulldogs. I think theyre on a roll and Essendon will have to play pretty damn good to put up a show.
Good luck everyone, and start betting!

$90 on the dogs.

I always do sportsbetting with my father and brother, mostly horse racing, soccer and cycling. But this sounds like fun.

I'd so laugh if you all lose your complete money in the first round because the dogs don't win.  Laughing

can you bet on both?
$50 on each?
Essendon: $2.30 * $50 = $115
Bulldogs: $1.58 *$50 = $79
(worst case scenario you lose $21)

If that's allowed I want to do that. I'll be the only one with profit if essendon wins, and if the dogs win I won't lose that much.

If this isn't allowed, my $90 bet still stands.
