Hi guys!

I downloaded a few months ago some replay (don't remember address this site, sorry), which "never ended". This is link for this replay. How is it possible? Is it a bug? Are you know another interesting replays like this?

Icy.pl? Smile

Not a bug, but rather a result of the modification of the replay.

I remember Jacob talking about this replay, but I cannot find the exact post.

Welcome to the forum. Smile

PS. Are you Polish? Wink

Icy Tower replays work on a principle of "playing the game again". There is information about the floors you have played on and the keys you have pressed saved in the replay.
The game starts the game on the same floors and moves the character by pressing exactly the same keys that are saved in the replay.

The author of this replay modified the keypresses in such manner that the character doesn't die when all the keypresses are replayed. Because the game has no more instructions, it doesn't move the character anymore.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to save such replay in natural way because the saving routine is only initiated after you die.

Hmm.

So, whether you'll ask more questions or not will depend on whether we'll manage to teach you to edit replays in our first reply, won't it? Wink

Technically, a hex editor could work, but the replay would become invalid. The only reason why there's a valid replay that was edited is that the author also overcame the security measures. But we don't want to do that, because if somebody made a replay editor, it would ruin the game for everybody who played fair without cheats.

That was for 1.3
We're talking about 1.4 here.

It feels nostalgic to remember how I played around with a hex editor until I decoded the replay format with just my own head. I could write replays almost from scratch back then. Johan added some security tricks as of 1.3 and it is (near) impossible to break those without reverse engineering.
